Power Usage Effectiveness

PUE, or Power Usage Effectiveness, measures data center energy efficiency by dividing total facility power by the power delivered to IT equipment. A PUE of 1.0 would be perfectly efficient. Most modern facilities operate somewhere between roughly 1.2 and 1.6.

Power Usage Effectiveness was developed by The Green Grid and is now the most widely cited efficiency metric in the data center industry. The calculation is straightforward: total facility energy divided by IT equipment energy. Everything that is not compute, meaning cooling, lighting, power conversion losses, and building systems, shows up as overhead in the numerator.

How to read a PUE claim

PUE figures are easy to present favorably. A number measured at full design load in mild weather will look considerably better than an annualized figure covering a partially occupied facility through a full summer. Sophisticated buyers ask whether a quoted number is annualized, at what load, and measured at which point in the electrical chain.

Publishing a specific annualized figure with its measurement conditions signals operational confidence. Publishing a suspiciously round design figure with no context signals the opposite to anyone who knows the industry.
